Monsignor Hayes

Monsignor Hayes was born in Ireland on October 22, 1881. We know little of his early life, but at age 40, after serving the church in Redding, he came to Placerville as an administrater. He was appointed pastor of St. Patrick's in 1923. He worked very diligently and with the help of God and many dedicated catholics, he accomplished great things in and around Placerville. In 1925 he built the mission church of St. James in Georgetown, now referred to "the old church". He remodeled St. Patrick's during 1926 and 1927. In 1940 he built the parish hall (now used as the youth center) for the use of the community. Father Hayes was made a Monsignor in the late forties. In 1948 he was instrumental in bringing the first Catholic Sisters to Placerville. By 1950 he had built them a convent.

Monsignor Hayes started the "Rice for China" program in St. Patrick's parish. He also started the first "Holy Name Society" in Placerville.

Monsignor Hayes died on February 19, 1952. His remains are buried beneath the altar of the church. He must have been a man of God with great vision for the future, who met the challenge to spread the faith to the entire community, who held him in high esteem.

Shortly after his death the "Columbian Fathers" magazine ran an article about Monsignor Hayes and his "Rice for China" program.

We should all keep in mind the affect this one person had on the development of our community and strive to make sure that our council lives up to the standards set by our namesake.
